Assembly

Last week Rooms 10 and 15 hosted their second school Assembly of the year. It all began like this.

During the Rugby World Cup one wet winters day
Mrs Stewart was looking for Rooms 10 and 15 at Sunnybrae.

She headed out back to check the grounds
And was nearing the field when she noticed some sounds.

People were cheering and someone yelled, “Catch!”
and Mrs Stewart stepped into the beginning of …

A rugby match!

Below Evie who played the part of Mrs Stewart with the real Mrs Stewart.

Cultural Week at Sunnybrae

We recently celebrated all of the wonderful cultures we have at Sunnybrae. There are 25 of us in Room 10, if 11 students come from New Zealand, how many of us come from other countries? Answer this question on post a comment.

Narrative Orientations

Read some more of our interesting orientations for The Monkey and the Crocodile.

One sunny morning a very hungry crocodile was sitting on her eggs keeping them warm. She was starving to death. All of a sudden she saw a monkey.
By Sam

Hundreds of years ago there was a very wise monkey still living when the dinosaurs were alive. They were living at the foot of the Himalaya Mountains.
By Te Rangi

Many years ago when dinosaurs lived there lived a big, strong and smart monkey. She lived in a fig tree at the bottom of the Himalaya Mountains by the river Ganges. In the river lived a crocodile. She said, "that monkey's heart looks like a juicy treat to me!"

Character Descriptions

This week in writing we have been learning to write character descriptions for a Narrative story. We had to describe the crocodile from Oban's The Monkey and the Crocodile.

One sunny morning a crocodile was prowling around. There appeared a plump monkey. He saw the crocodile's turned out toes and grip skin plus her enormous, thick tail and her dagger-like teeth.
By Jessica

One day a terrifying crocodile was swimming in the river Ganges. The crocodile had sharp teeth like a tiger. It had terrifying and googly eyes. Her tail was floppy and triangular. She became more angry and greedy as her slimy, wet body swam through the water.
By Thomas

Her drool came sliding down her scaly cheek then her mouth opened. It was an enormous mouth and you could see her pointed teeth. Her tennis ball eyes and jaws were wide open.

How do we feel about reading?

We have been thinking about how we feel about reading.

I like reading because it helps you learn more things and it helps you learn words that you don’t know. My favourite books to read are ‘Baa Baa Smart Sheep’ and ‘A Dog Like That’ and last of all Felicity books. I read lots of books at home because I want to learn more words. I sometimes go to the Glenfield Library with mum and Matthew to go on the computer, search for books and take them out. I have my own library card.
Hannah

I like reading because I like information on spies. My favourite books to read are Secret Seven books because they are exciting. I read at night when I don’t have anything else to do. I think reading is fun because I learn more. I go to the library in Birkenhead with my dad and little brother.
Jamie

I like reading because there are lots of pictures and words that I can read. My favourite books to read are Zac Power books because they are interesting books with lots of awesome pictures. I read at home because I am learning different words. I think reading is cool because my teacher gives me different reading books everyday. I go to the library because there are lots of books to choose from.
Rio

Howick Village

I was lucky to use the stilts because it was practice for balancing, it was fun and scary at the same time.
Una

I liked the 1850’s classroom visit. The teacher was strict, I shivered with fear. I liked the slateboards, they were amazing because you could rub your mistakes off.

Science and Technology Week

Something I enjoyed about Science and Technology week was...
- making the marble movers at home because my dad helped me. (Hannah)
- the egg mania because you were not allowed to test your egg before judging. (Jack)
- working in teams to complete the luge technology challenge. (Isabella)

Next time it is Science and Technology Week ...
- I would like to get the whole school in the hall and one person from each class gets up on stage and a teacher calls questions out to the people on stage like a quiz. (Dylan)
- I would like to design a new playground with lots of twists and turns. (Renae)

Book Week Writing Activity

We had to read each sentence and decide whether we would be more likely to find the sentence at the beginning of a story or at the end of a story. What do you think?
When we had finished Miss Rodger asked us to replace one word in each sentence so they were still interesting to read.

Finally, all the noise stopped and we went back into the house.
Finally, all the fuss stopped and we went back into the house.
Joel and Dylan

We wished we had never opened that box.
We wished we had never opened that cage.
Bailey and Te Rangi

Once upon a time, there was a magical spider.
Once upon a time there was a venomous spider.
Sanha and Caiden

It seemed like there was nothing we could do to solve this problem.
It seemed like there was nothing we could do to solve this mystery.
Mere, Mikayla and Jessica

It was the best movie I had ever seen!
It was the scariest movie I had ever seen!

This week for Book Week students got to draw Stu Duval cartoons in the library at lunchtime. Mikayla published her cartoon on kidpix. Can you guess what letter you have to start with to draw this animal?

Haikus

We have been learning to write haikus about the seasons. The first line has 5 syllables, the middle line has 7 syllables and the last line has 5 syllables.

Literacy and Book Week

To begin Literacy Week Miss Rodger gave us a sentence starter. We worked in buzz groups to add on to it.

I was reading a book when I looked up. There in the window I saw ...
a swarm of bees hovering in midair, flying around their beehive. They looked furious because we had knocked their old beehive down. They all dashed into the window and tried to sting us. They looked like they were all saying, "fly through the window and sting any humans you find!"

By Judy, Isabella, Jamie and Te Rangi

I was reading a book when I looked up. There in the window I saw ...
a wizard. He released some ghosts and skeletons from his chest. His name was Ghosthead and he was a wicked wizard. He was 10 000 years old and wore a bright purple hat. People say he was a legend. His favourite snack was Ogre eyeballs.

Joel's Book Choice.

I chose this Zac Power book "Frozen Fear" by H.I. Larry because I like all the Zac Power books I have read so far.
I love them because they are full of action and technology.
My Mum enjoys reading them to me.

Maia reads a Lauren Child book.

This week my choice of library book was "What Planet are you from, Clarice Bean?" by Lauren Child.
When I was looking for my library book, I thought that this book was cool. I thought the name "What Planet are you from?" was interesting. I love the way the book is illustrated because the style makes me want to draw like that when I'm older.

Evie's book choice.

Once my teacher read "The Loon on the Moon" to our class and I thought it was great so I got it out.
My favourite bit was when one night there were no dreams from all the children in town.
The Loon went up into space and asked all the space animals if they had any dreams?
But they said "No!"
I love all the sparkles at the end and the ones in the book.

Dylan is reading Zac Power books.

I have read Shockwaves.
Zac is in the jungle in Africa. He is looking for a special crystal.
This is the third Zac Power book I have read. I choose them because they are full of action and animals
.

Sanha reads Star Wars

The book that I read this week is The Clone Wars - Pirates and Worse.
I love reading Star wars books because they are cool and fun. My favourite characters are Siths and Jedies.

Matthew's book this week.

I read Felix Smith has every right to be a Crocodile by Jackie French.
I chose this book because it has lots of information in it. I like this book because it is fun to read too.

Dylan reads ZAC Power books

My book I read this week was ZAC Power Shockwave.
It was my third book in the Zac Power series. I choose because I like ZAC Power books.

Grandparents Morning

Today was very special at Sunnybrae because lots of Grandparents came to see all of the wonderful things we do at school. First we took our grandparents on a tour of the school then they helped us with our maths and writing. Some of them even joined in with Jump Jam at fitness time.

Picasso Art

Today Mrs Smith worked with us during art. We read a Picasso story and drew portraits using shapes for facial features. What shapes can you see in our faces?

Basketball

Yesterday Room 10 went to basketball and our coach was called Tony. My favourite game was called Golden Child because we had to run and I didn’t stop once. The easiest part of the game was shooting the ball. The hardest part was the tagging game because it was hard to bounce the ball and tag your buddy at the same time. I think Tony is cool because he is good at bouncing the ball high. I like basketball because sometimes you get the ball in the hoop and sometimes you don’t. Next time I would like to be chosen as the golden child.
By Jack

Yesterday I went with my class to basketball coaching. My favourite game was passing because I like catching and throwing. The easiest part was getting a home run in the game because you had to run a long way. The hardest part of the tagging game was that we were not allowed to run to get away and also it is very hard to tag your partner because they keep getting away from you. I think Tony is cool because he trains the Breakers. I don't like basketball because I don't think I am very good at it. Next time I would like to shoot at least one goal.
By Mere

Swimming Sports

We are learning to begin our recounts with a 'hook' to interest our readers.

We were all excited. People were whispering and staring. I dived into the pool and I tried my hardest to swim. I kicked my legs like a motor and it made people start to cheer.
By Evie

Unfortunately my mum was not there because she had work to do. I still had confidence in myself and I was happy.

By Mikayla

Today I was scared because I was going in the cold water. I jumped in and suddenly my heart starting beating faster.

I Am Special

During Visual Art we made collage people and then wrote about why our brains, hearts, hands and feet are special.

My brain is special because it helps me to read and write. My brain is like a huge envelope that stores a whole bunch of information and facts about stuff I learn. It helps me to think properly. Sometimes I can’t control myself talking and acting, I need to use my brain to help me with that. I use my brain for learning things like basic facts, writing and reading, that sort of stuff.

My heart is special because I keep it healthy. I know you keep it healthy by swimming, running, jumping and drinking water. Once I heard a fact about hearts; it was that your heart beats about seventy times a minute.

By Judy

My hands are useful for recorder and playstation. I have played the recorder for a long time.

I use my feet for kicking a ball and riding my bike. Did you know I have seven gears on my bike?

We Are All Special

In Room 10 we have been learning to define the differences between us. We used a define map to help us write this definition as a class.

We are all different in Room 10. Some of us are girls and some of us are boys. We have different names. Some of us come from different countries and speak different languages. We look different; we have different skin, hair and eye colours. We like different things like types of food, clothes and toys. We have different personalities. All of these things make everyone of us special.
